The Waiting: Police emergency response times skyrocket as officers flee NOPD

By JEFF ADELSON, JOHN SIMERMAN | Staff writers and DAVID HAMMER | WWL-TV AUG 26, 2022 - 4:32 PM Mark Mascar lay huddled with his dog, Lotus, under a van parked near his home in Mid-City, pleading on his cell phone for police. “I’m in danger! They’re chasing me with a gun!” he told a 911 dispatcher shortly before 9 a.m. on May 30. He’d been waiting nine minutes before he implored, “Is someone coming or not?” Someone was, the dispatcher assured him, though she couldn’t say how much longer it might take. Waits for police to respond to emergency calls like Mascar’s have skyrocketed this year as the New Orleans Police Department sheds officers, 911 call data show. Mascar, like many emergency callers, didn’t think waiting was much of an option. The British transplant had just pulled out his phone to record a pickup truck with two men he’d seen breaking into a vehicle, when the truck turned around. A window lowered as it came back at him, and the men flashed handguns, he said. Mascar, 54, ran...

People fall victim to viral TikTok challenge that teaches criminals how to steal cars

Imagine this — you lock your car at night, you bring your keys inside, and you wake up to find your car has been stolen. It’s happening to people right here in New Orleans, and the New Orleans Police Department says could be attributed to hacks on social media that teach people how to steal cars with a USB cable. For Keyondra New, what she thought was a dream quickly turned into a real-life nightmare. “Last Saturday, I came outside at like 9 o’clock in the morning, my car was gone, and I thought that it got towed, so I went down to the tow yard for the city. It wasn’t there.” However, when New informed her family about her missing vehicle, they told her about a viral trend on TikTok making it easier for people to steal vehicles. “There’s a social media trend, usually on TikTok, of some individuals that figured out how easy to steal certain model cars,” NOPD Det. Joshua Diaz told WGNO’s Anna McAllister. “People are finding it and replicating that, unfortunately here.” The videos show pe...

Video of off-duty New Orleans cop beaten up and allegedly robbed raises questions

What started as a cop getting jumped escalated into a full out brawl between multiple people.  Author: Lily Cummings Video of an off-duty NOPD officer being beaten and allegedly robbed early Monday leaves a lot of unanswered questions.  The NOPD says they responded to the 700 block of St. Louis Street early Monday morning. As he turns around and continues to bike towards Bourbon Street, some of the people follow him until they all go out of frame.  Suddenly, at 2:54 a.m. the off-duty officer reappears on the surveillance video. New Orleans can be a true music city, but it's time for changes.

New Orleans can be a true music city, but it's time for changes by: JAN RAMSEY Now that the “music city” of New Orleans has someone ( Howie Kaplan , director of New Orleans Nighttime Economy office) who can be the liaison between music, musicians, venues, bars and restaurants, he needs some input on what needs to be done to improve the lot of local musicians and night time economy businesses.  Many other cities in the US and   in Europe   are following this model. What needs to be done, in your opinion? I have my own thoughts on the matter (what, you’re surprised?), and here are a few of the things I’ve observed that could use some attention (in no particular order): Create parking zones for musicians to loan/unload gear, especially in crowded entertainment zones, like Frenchmen, Bourbon Street. Create a security task force through neighborhood associations or business organizations to “police” entertainment districts. Require members of said associations/organizations to...

The Visiting Room Project

Nearly 5,000 people are sentenced to die in Louisiana prisons without any possibility of parole. This is the largest collection of first-person testimonials ever gathered from people serving this sentence. The Visiting Room Project is a digital experience that invites the public to sit face-to-face with people serving life without the possibility of parole to hear them tell their stories, in their own words.  More than five years in the making, the site is the only collection of its kind, containing over 100 filmed interviews with people currently serving life without parole.  The interviews were filmed at Angola, the Louisiana State Penitentiary, which is, in many ways, the epicenter of life without parole sentences worldwide.  As of 2022, more than 55,000 Americans are living in prisons serving life without parole, their lives largely hidden from public view.  ENTER THE VISITING ROOM

By all accounts, he took over a place racked by scandal, violence and high turnover by both management and staff, much of it going back years to when the lockup was called the Youth Study Center.  After being on an unspecified leave of absence since March 18, Webster’s long-anticipated resignation was finally announced Monday.  Now, as rumors swirl that Webster may surface in another high-profile city job, a look back at his tenure at JJIC director reveals that he was often absent from that job and, according to employees, may have made a troubled lockup even worse.  Running Qualified People Away About...
